[Rhodes22-list] I'm Back

Mark,

Hey, congratulations to you and Julie on a good season. I don't think we
maybe take the race at Ky Lake quite as seriously as some of the folks that
race on a more regular basis. We pretty much go out with our normal cruising
stuff still loaded in the boat. I actually did unload my second anchor this
year though :-). But I guess as things go, if we all have all our stuff on
the boats, that does make us all handicapped about equally, so maybe it's
moot. It's kinda nice that, at least so far, everyone else in the race has
felt this way, saves a lot of work if you don't have to be too serious :-).

I am kinda interested to see what happens when the first standard mast setup
shows up for the race at Ky Lake. It'll be interesting to see just how much
better the standard mainsail really is. I have never been a sailor or
sailboat racer up until the last couple years, still don't consider myself a
sailboat racer. But, I have been involved heavily in sprint car racing for
the last 15 - 16 years, been in the top ten in our sanctioning body's
national points standing for probably 10 of those years, and I find that the
most horsepower doesn't always win the race. It don't hurt, mind you, but
there's a lot more to racing than just horsepower. Doesn't matter whether
it's cars or boats, the skill and consistency of the driver can make up for
a lot of improperly handled horse power in another car/boat. I used to just
love whipping up on the guys that had all the fanciest and most expensive
stuff in their motors with my little cheapie peanut motors. They sometimes
seem to forget that you still have to drive and setup the race car
reasonably well to get to the front. Don't believe boats will be any
different.

So, good luck in your future racing endeavors. Try not to fall into the "I
gotta have the most horsepower in the place" trap. You'll save a ton of
money and have a lot more fun. You've already seen that your supposed "lower
horsepower" setup can indeed get to the front if it's handled properly.

Rik
