[Rhodes22-list] Boom Room

Here are some shots of mine. Let's talk design. First, it's made out
of dacron sailcloth--not canvass. You assemble the frame made of 1"
PVC pipe and attach the roof which hangs from the boom and
height-adjusted with the topping lift. Then you attach whatever side
panels you want. You can choose anything from just the roof for a sun
shade to fully enclosed with either screen windows or solid all the way
around. With the rear panel off, I can stand up on the laz and cook on
the stern-mounted grill. Otherwise it's standing head room in the
cockpit. The frame comes apart and stores in a bundle and a long bag
like tent poles. It's about five feet long and we keep it on the port
shelf in the V berth. The cloth is folded up and bagged about the size
of a small beach ball and we keep it in the laz next to the pop top
enclosure. Yes, we have both and use both depending on the situation.
To clarify--we don't use both at the same time although we could.
There's no interference or connections between the two.

A couple minor drawbacks to our boom room: The forward side panels
snap down along the outside of the rails maximizing the room inside.
Unlike the pop top encl which snaps down on the side of the cabin.
This means the aft lower shrouds are in the way. So we cut slots in
the roof to go around the shrouds and sewed in velcro flaps to close
the slots. It works but it's not fully bug proof and leaks a little
water when it rains. However, the water leaks onto the side decks and
runs off. The cockpit and cabin stay dry. It's also difficult to get
to the fore deck when it's fully assembled. You have to duck and crawl
along the side decks. Good thing I'm slim.

It takes 10 or 15 minutes to set up and about 5 to tear down. I don't
know why any manufacturer would need to have the boat to make this.
Just duplicate the dimensions of the panels. Just the snap placement
is customized to your own boat, the same as we now do with the PTE.

It might be better if the two WERE integrated. You set up the pop top
encl first and then add the boom room if needed. It would attach to
the PTE and would require less frame and less cloth than mine and there
would be no interference with the shrouds. And easier to get to the
foredeck. It would not extend all the way to the mast as mine does,
rather it would just continue aft from the PTE. But I'd stick to the
PVC frame. It's cheap and easy to fabricate replacement pieces if
anything breaks.
