Andrew,

If your mooring line goes off just one side of the boat it will have a
tendency to "hunt" -- like a dog first sniffing one way then another.

There are so many factors working on our boats -- tides, currents,
ferries, winds, large boat wakes--and each boat reacts differently. Our
moorings tend to be set up so that each boat can swing in an opposite
direction and they won't smash into each other. In crowded moorings
they try to group all the boats so they all swing in the same directions.

I took a photo last summer in Greenwich Cove of boats pointed in 360
degrees of different angles. Some were more influenced by tide, others
by wind, others by ... It was an amazing sight if you are accustomed to
looking at boats on their moorings to determine which way the wind
blows. Sometimes you do need a weatherman.
