hello Chet:

For stating out sailing I recommend

"The Complete Sailor: Learnig the Art of Sailing"
by David Seidman

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Sailor-Learning-Art-Sailing/dp/0070571317/sr=8-1/qid=1161959932/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4664229-4203336?ie=UTF8&s=books

(Seidman's book has pretty pictures too!)

I also like:
"Sailing Drills: How to Sail Better, Faster, Smarter,
Safer"
by Rick White, Mary Wells

http://www.amazon.com/Sailing-Drills-Better-Faster-Smarter/dp/1880871017/sr=1-1/qid=1161960277/ref=sr_1_1/102-4664229-4203336?ie=UTF8&s=books

The sailing drills is great to set you up with now that I'm
awayfrom the dock what should I practice?

When you're ready to do a little more serious cruising then
the reference books come in handy.

Additionally, I like the US Sailing training books you can
get on line at http://ussailing.org These are part of the
ASA 101/103/104 .. courses taught at various places.
Additionally, the online tutorials on navigation, and
piloting are good, and free. BTW, if you're not a member,
you may want to look into joining.

For reference books:

The Annappolis Book of Seamandship
http://www.amazon.com/Annapolis-Book-Seamanship-Completely-Expanded/dp/0684854201/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b/102-4664229-4203336

and

Chapman's Guide to Piloting and Seamanship
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/102-4664229-4203336?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Chapman%27+Piloting+&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

You will also need the
usual chart kit for your area, and tide tables.

happy winter reading!
joe/hadz.
