I agree with you, that most probably the only lift , without the tilt would  
result in reduced impact on the transom.....  Perhaps you have one of those  
stronger transoms, with little or no flex, or will consider just the 
replacement  of backer material with greater strength/surface area  stuff , or lighter  
motor.... 
 
I don't recall any other reports of similar "outboard rip outs" ... do you?  
It did sneak up on me like cheap underwear!
