Slim:
"de-core"ing the line for furlers has been a suggested answer to problems
like your for many years.
However, I believe that "de-core"ing weakens the line too much. The core
provides length strengh. I suggest that if in fact your line is 1/4", that
you contact the Rope Dope [http://www.theropedope.com/index.htm] and tell
him your problem and ask his recommendation and price for new line that is
10' 3/16th inches long and with his professional splicing to the remainder
lenth in 1/4".

That combination has to be stronger.
